Audi integrates ChatGPT into its infotainment system, enhancing voice control for two million vehicles from July 2024, offering natural language interaction for a seamless driving experience.

Audi is enhancing its voice control capabilities by integrating the AI-based chatbot ChatGPT into its infotainment system through the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service. Starting in July, owners of approximately two million Audi models manufactured since 2021 and equipped with the third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB 3) will be able to utilize natural language to interact with their cars.

This feature will also be included in new models such as the Q6 e-tron1 and future vehicles featuring the E3 1.2 electronics architecture via Cerence Chat Pro, extending the functionality of the Audi assistant.

The incorporation of ChatGPT into Audi’s MIB 3 online voice input system, beginning with models from the 2021 model year like the Audi A3, expands the possibilities of voice control. Drivers will be able to operate the infotainment, navigation, and climate control systems using enhanced voice commands.

Additionally, they can now ask general knowledge questions while driving, improving safety by allowing them to keep their eyes on the road. This new feature leverages the Azure OpenAI Service and is built on Cerence Inc.’s Chat Pro solution, providing an automotive-grade ChatGPT integration.

Marcus Keith, Vice President of Interior, Infotainment, and Connectivity Development at Audi, emphasizes the seamless integration of ChatGPT into the voice control system. He notes, “In addition to a range of voice-controlled functions, our customers will now benefit from simple and secure access to AI-based knowledge. This is the next step towards a best-in-class in-cabin experience in Audi vehicles.”

The enhanced Audi assistant, particularly in models with the new E3 1.2 electronics architecture debuting in the Audi Q6 e-tron1, allows passengers to activate the system by saying “Hey Audi” or using the steering wheel’s push-to-talk button. The assistant distinguishes whether to execute vehicle functions, search for destinations, or provide information like weather forecasts.

ChatGPT is utilized only when the Audi system cannot answer general knowledge queries, ensuring a seamless user experience. Data security is a top priority, with all queries and responses being deleted after processing, and ChatGPT having no access to vehicle data.

Looking ahead, Audi envisions even more capabilities for ChatGPT, such as answering questions about vehicle specifics like tire pressure. The use of large language models, including those from Cerence, will enable these and other functionalities.

As a digital and data-driven company, Audi aims to harness the full potential of artificial intelligence to enhance customer experiences and optimize business processes. AI applications at Audi include creative design inputs, HR knowledge transfer, and quality control in production.

For instance, AI is used for spot weld inspections in body construction and crack detection in the press shop. Audi is committed to responsible AI use, adhering to compliance, regulations like the EU Data Act and AI Act, and ethical guidelines, while also training employees to use AI in a forward-thinking manner.
