Ford’s latest BlueCruise 1.5 hands-free driving software introduces an exciting new feature—Automatic Lane Change. Imagine you’re cruising on the highway at 70 mph, but there’s a semi-truck ahead moving at 55 mph.

With BlueCruise 1.5, your vehicle can now automatically and seamlessly switch lanes to pass slower traffic without requiring you to touch the steering wheel.

This new functionality, developed by Ford’s Advanced Driver Assistance (ADAS) team, enhances the hands-free driving experience, allowing you to stay engaged in BlueCruise mode for longer periods.

BlueCruise 1.5 ensures a smoother, more natural driving experience by avoiding abrupt merges or risky maneuvers. For example, it avoids merging into the right-hand lane near off-ramps or into faster-moving traffic that could require manual intervention.

This smart feature extends hands-free driving time, with internal testing showing that BlueCruise 1.5 can handle up to 45% of lane changes on a typical drive.

Here’s how it works: BlueCruise assesses when it’s safe to change lanes, providing visual and audio prompts before initiating the maneuver. It also explains the reason for the lane change, such as overtaking slower traffic.

The lane change will happen automatically unless you cancel it by tapping the turn signal or holding the steering wheel. If preferred, you can disable this feature entirely in the Driver Assistance settings.

Ford has steadily improved BlueCruise since its initial launch on the Mustang Mach-E. After rolling out BlueCruise 1.0, subsequent versions 1.2 and 1.3 brought new features and performance tweaks. Now, the 2025 Mustang Mach-E will debut BlueCruise 1.5, offering Mustang owners even more hands-free driving capabilities.

BlueCruise data from the U.S. shows that the feature is popular, with 77% of trips using it for shorter drives and over half of highway trips longer than an hour using BlueCruise for extended stretches. Whether for daily commutes or long road trips, BlueCruise is designed to make highway driving more enjoyable and effortless.
