Hyundai and Waymo partner to integrate autonomous driving technology into Hyundai’s IONIQ 5, expanding Waymo’s fleet and advancing electric vehicle innovation by 2025.

Hyundai Motor Company and Waymo have entered a multi-year strategic partnership to integrate Waymo’s fully autonomous driving technology into Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 electric SUVs.

The partnership will see Hyundai’s IONIQ 5, equipped with Waymo’s sixth-generation autonomous system, join the Waymo One fleet over time.

The IONIQ 5 vehicles will be built at Hyundai’s new Metaplant in Georgia, with production ramping up over the coming years to support Waymo’s growing fleet.

On-road testing of the Waymo-enabled IONIQ 5 is expected to start by late 2025, with the vehicles becoming available to Waymo One riders soon after.

Hyundai President José Muñoz highlighted the shared vision for safer, more efficient mobility, while Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana praised Hyundai’s commitment to sustainability. Both companies are also exploring further opportunities for collaboration.

The IONIQ 5, known for its award-winning electric design, will feature modifications for autonomous use, including redundant hardware and fast-charging capabilities. This partnership marks the first in Hyundai’s new autonomous vehicle initiative, positioning Waymo as a key collaborator in Hyundai’s plans for SAE Level 4 autonomy.
