Bruno Sacco, one of the most influential automotive designers, passed away on September 19, 2024, at the age of 90 in Sindelfingen. The Italian-born designer, who held German citizenship, was Mercedes-Benz’s Chief Designer from 1975 until his retirement in 1999.
Sacco’s work left an indelible mark on the automotive world, shaping several iconic models, including the E-Class (series 124), S-Class (series 126), and the Mercedes-Benz 190 (W 201), with a design philosophy that emphasized timeless elegance and the continuity of the Mercedes-Benz identity across generations.

Joining Daimler-Benz in 1958, Sacco spent his entire career with the company, eventually becoming a defining figure in automotive design. He was particularly proud of the saloons and coupés of the 126 series, which he considered his finest work.
Under his leadership, Mercedes-Benz vehicles not only gained aesthetic refinement but also integrated functionality and aerodynamic efficiency, evident in models like the SL (R 129) and the compact W 201, which attracted a younger audience to the brand.
Sacco’s contributions went beyond vehicles, playing a key role in establishing Mercedes’ Design Center in Sindelfingen, designed by Renzo Piano. Throughout his career, Sacco received numerous honors, including induction into the Automotive Hall of Fame.
Even in retirement, he reflected fondly on his time at Mercedes, stating, “Mercedes has been my life, and I stand for that time one hundred percent.” His legacy continues to influence automotive design, with many of his creations still revered today.
