The Ford Motor Company Archives recently facilitated the loan of one of the original “Skyway Mustangs” to the Walt Disney Company for their D23 Ultimate Fan Event in Anaheim, California, from August 9-11. This special appearance was a nod to the Mustang’s significant debut at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, where it was first introduced to the public alongside other Ford models in a spectacular pavilion created by Disney.
The Ford Pavilion, a major attraction at the Fair, was the result of three years of collaboration between Ford and WED Enterprises, the creative arm of Disney. The 12-minute ride showcased Ford’s latest models, including the Ford Galaxie, Lincoln Continental, and Fairlane.

However, the real surprise was the unveiling of the all-new Mustang, with twelve of the cars featured prominently in the attraction. Today, the location is known for its connection to four of those original Mustangs, and it was one of these historic vehicles that was displayed at the D23 event, marking the 60th anniversary of the World’s Fair. The Mustang’s display was part of a broader Disney Archives exhibit that highlighted iconic cars featured in various Disney films.
D23, Disney’s official fan club, hosts biannual events that draw thousands of Disney enthusiasts. This year’s Ultimate Fan Event saw over 75,000 attendees flock to celebrate everything Disney.
The event included the “Great Big Beautiful Car Show,” a stunning exhibit that featured more than 30 vehicles spread across 24,000 square feet. Among these, the Skyway Mustang was undoubtedly the star attraction, showcased in a re-creation of the archway from the 1964 World’s Fair.
In addition to the car exhibit, I had the privilege of participating in a panel discussion titled “A Beautiful Tomorrow – Just a Dream Away: Disney at the 1964-65 World’s Fair.” Moderated by the esteemed film critic Leonard Maltin, the panel featured an impressive lineup, including Disney Archivist Becky Cline, “Monsters Inc.” Director Pete Docter, Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald, “Tomorrowland” Production Designer Ramsey Avery, and surprise guests like composer Michael Giacchino, Director/Actor Jon Favreau, and Marvel President Kevin Feige.
Though I might have felt out of place among such distinguished company, my role was to share the fascinating story of the Mustang’s debut at the World’s Fair—a story that resonated with the audience and leveled the playing field.
The discussion was a breeze, given the Mustang’s iconic status as a car that has captured the public’s imagination since its introduction. Its design perfectly embodied the spirit of its era, and it continues to do so for each new generation. The backstage chatter was reminiscent of Mustang meetups I’ve attended, with everyone sharing their Mustang stories—Leonard Maltin even expressed his regret over selling his 1968 Mustang on stage.
Few cars can evoke the kind of response that the Mustang did in 1964, and as we celebrate its 60th anniversary, it’s clear that the Mustang remains the quintessential sporty car for today’s drivers. It was truly an honor to work with the Walt Disney Company Archives to celebrate this enduring automotive legend with Disney fans.
