JLR has successfully recruited 200 talented undergraduates from diverse backgrounds to join its UK facilities this summer, including the West Midlands, Halewood, and Manchester. These recruits, specializing in areas such as software engineering, electrical engineering, propulsion engineering, commercial, design, manufacturing, and HR, will start their roles in July and August.

This recruitment effort aligns with JLR’s Reimagine strategy, aiming for carbon net zero by 2039. By the end of this summer, JLR will have onboarded nearly 900 students, from apprentices to graduates, providing them with promising future careers in the automotive industry.

This includes the recent hiring of over 250 electrification engineers for their Gaydon and Whitley facilities to support the development of next-generation electric vehicles. Additionally, JLR will welcome over 650 apprentices and degree apprentices in September.

To foster a diverse workforce, JLR has proactively engaged with students nationwide, encouraging inclusivity and making the application process more equitable. This commitment to diversity is seen as crucial for fostering innovation, challenging conventional thinking, and promoting creative problem-solving.

Thomas Mueller, Executive Director of Product Engineering, emphasized the importance of diversity in driving innovation and evolving leadership within the company. He stated, “The recent recruitment of 200 undergraduates from diverse backgrounds demonstrates our commitment to improving opportunities for underrepresented groups, including women, those from different nationalities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and other underrepresented groups.”

One of the newly recruited undergraduates is Surayya Kausar, a 20-year-old Vehicle Programme Engineer studying mechatronic and robotic engineering. She expressed her excitement about joining JLR and working on the next generation of pure electric vehicles. Surayya was recently honored with the Emerging Young Leader Award by the Institute of Leadership for her role as the education officer for the Black and Ethnic Minority Engineering Society at the University of Sheffield.

JLR’s university engagement team has been instrumental in attracting quality, diverse talent through undergraduate and graduate programs. They attended over 30 career fairs, collaborated with partners like Bright Network and Women in STEM, and hosted employability workshops and inspiration events at JLR sites.

These efforts have connected with tens of thousands of students, contributing to JLR’s rise by 17 places in The Times Top 100 Graduate Employer ranking and winning the Best Emerging Recruitment Strategy award at the Firm Awards last year.

In addition to undergraduate recruitment, JLR launched the Schools Partnership Programme last year, benefiting 40,000 students from diverse backgrounds. This program focuses on improving opportunities in fields such as electrical and software engineering, digital and data roles, and autonomous technologies for underrepresented groups, including young women, students from varying socioeconomic backgrounds, and those with English as a second language.

The program is being implemented in 40 secondary schools near JLR sites in Coventry, Warwickshire, Birmingham, the Black Country, Solihull, Liverpool, and local University Technical Colleges.
