The BMW Group is embarking on a new era of fully electric driving with its Neue Klasse models, which will heavily rely on advanced high-voltage batteries. To support this transition, BMW is significantly expanding its global production network for these batteries. “We are setting up five facilities on three continents to produce our sixth-generation high-voltage batteries,” stated Milan Nedeljković, Board Member for Production at BMW AG. The strategy of “local for local” will be crucial, ensuring battery production is closely linked with vehicle production to enhance resilience and reduce carbon footprints.

Localized Production for Global Efficiency

The Neue Klasse models will feature innovative cylindrical cells that offer improved energy density, charging times, and range. These batteries will be produced in new state-of-the-art facilities near vehicle plants, adhering to the “local for local” principle. Construction is underway in Irlbach-Strasskirchen (Germany), Debrecen (Hungary), Woodruff (USA), Shenyang (China), and San Luis Potosí (Mexico). This strategy not only ensures continuity in production despite geopolitical or economic disruptions but also minimizes the environmental impact by reducing transportation distances.

Debrecen Leads the Way

The first Neue Klasse vehicles will roll off the production line at BMW’s new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, starting in 2025. High-voltage battery and vehicle production will commence simultaneously. Preparations for this launch are well underway, with employees already working and training at the site. The final buildings are nearing completion, set to be operational by the end of the year, ensuring a smooth transition to series production.

Expanding in Lower Bavaria and Beyond

In Germany, the new facility in Irlbach-Strasskirchen will manufacture high-voltage batteries for Neue Klasse models. The construction began in April 2024, with the first production hall pillars erected by June. This facility will support BMW’s German car plants, aligning with the local production strategy.

Meanwhile, in Shenyang, China, production of Neue Klasse vehicles will begin in 2026. The new battery production hall, completed in November 2023, is already installing necessary machinery. This site is part of BMW’s extensive R&D network in China, which includes facilities in Beijing, Shanghai, and Nanjing.

Expanding Capabilities in Mexico and the USA

BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico will start producing Neue Klasse vehicles in 2027. This expansion includes a new high-voltage battery assembly plant and significant upgrades to existing bodyshop, assembly, and logistics spaces. The facility will also enhance its photovoltaic systems to generate over 20% of its electricity needs on-site.

In South Carolina, the BMW Group Plant Woodruff will cover 93 hectares and include various new structures, creating over 300 jobs. By 2026, this facility will assemble high-voltage batteries for electric cars produced at the nearby Plant Spartanburg.

Concentrated Battery Expertise in Germany

Prototype battery cells for the Neue Klasse are already being produced at BMW’s Cell Manufacturing Competence Centre (CMCC) in Parsdorf, near Munich. This centre complements the Battery Cell Competence Centre (BCCC) and focuses on scaling up production processes for series production. The close collaboration across BMW’s divisions ensures that the development and production processes are seamlessly integrated.
