BMW has become the first car manufacturer to integrate both a Level 2 and Level 3 driving assistance system in a single vehicle, offering these groundbreaking features in the new BMW 7 Series. This development marks a significant milestone in automated driving technology, providing unparalleled convenience and safety for drivers.

BMW Highway Assistant (Level 2): Enhanced Comfort for Long Journeys

The BMW Highway Assistant, an advanced Level 2 driving aid, significantly enhances comfort during long-distance travel. It operates at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph) on motorways with structurally separated carriageways. This system allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel for extended periods while remaining attentive to the road and ready to retake control if necessary.

Additionally, the Active Lane Change Assistant facilitates lane changes without requiring the driver to touch the steering wheel. The system performs necessary steering adjustments and manages vehicle speed for safe overtaking maneuvers. Drivers can initiate a lane change by simply looking at the exterior mirror to confirm the system’s suggestion.

BMW Personal Pilot (Level 3): Autonomous Driving in Traffic Jams

The BMW Personal Pilot L3, a Level 3 highly automated driving system, offers a revolutionary driving experience by allowing drivers to fully delegate driving tasks under specific conditions, such as in traffic jams on motorways. At speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), drivers can turn their attention away from the road and engage in other in-car activities like making phone calls, reading, writing messages, working, or streaming videos. However, drivers must be ready to resume control within a few seconds when prompted, especially in situations like approaching roadworks.

Combined Systems for a Comprehensive Driving Experience

The combination of these Level 2 and Level 3 systems within the new BMW 7 Series represents a significant advancement in automated driving, offering a comprehensive set of functionalities for both long and short journeys. Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President Driving Experience BMW Group, highlighted the company’s commitment to safety, comfort, and innovation: “We are setting new standards in the automotive industry by combining both technologies in the new BMW 7 Series.”

Availability and Pricing

The BMW Highway Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional are part of the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3 package, available exclusively in Germany for €6,000 (including VAT). Owners of cars already equipped with the BMW Personal Pilot L3 will be able to add the BMW Highway Assistant to their vehicle’s functions free of charge starting August 2024.

BMW’s integration of these dual-level automated driving systems underscores its dedication to pioneering safe and innovative driving solutions, setting a new benchmark in the automotive industry.
