Sales of the all-electric EV9 three-row SUV surged for the second consecutive month, propelling Kia to its highest monthly EV sales in history. The Sportage, Telluride, Carnival, EV6, and Niro also set all-time sales records in May.
IRVINE, Calif., May 31, 2024 – Bolstered by record-breaking sales performances from the EV9 and Sportage models, Kia America achieved unprecedented EV and SUV sales in the U.S. in May, totaling 75,156 units sold. This marks Kia’s most successful sales month ever.
Kia’s EV9 SUV saw 2,187 units sold, a 39% increase from the previous month, achieving its best monthly sales and marking the second month of growth in a row.

This surge in EV9 sales contributed to Kia’s overall EV sales rising by 127% year-over-year, reaching a historic 7,197 units sold in a single month.
The Sportage, Kia’s top-selling model so far in 2024, set a new monthly record with 15,512 units sold in May. Meanwhile, the Telluride, Carnival, EV6, and Niro also achieved new sales highs for the month of May, driving Kia’s utility model sales to account for 80% of the total sales in May.
“With our model development aligned with consumer needs and a robust vehicle supply, Kia sustained its sales growth momentum in May,” said Eric Watson, vice president of sales operations at Kia America. “Kia’s diverse lineup of electric, hybrid, and ICE models continues to meet customer demands, and we anticipate increased traffic and transactions in our dealerships.”
In addition to its record-breaking sales month, Kia America announced several new initiatives, including:
- The global debut of the upcoming all-electric Kia EV3 compact SUV.
- The commencement of U.S. production of the all-electric EV9 SUV at the Kia Georgia manufacturing plant on May 30.
- The EV9 winning top honors at the 2024 Northwest Automotive Press Association (NWAPA) Mudfest event, taking home the “Outdoor Utility Vehicle” and “Three-Row Family SUV” awards.
- The EV9 being named the “Electric Vehicle of Texas” at the 2024 Texas Auto Writers’ Association Auto Roundup.
