At the 2025 Advanced Clean Transportation Expo in Anaheim, Toyota Motor North America reinforced its commitment to building a hydrogen-powered future by unveiling plans to add fuel cell electric Class 8 trucks to its Southern California fleet and launching its next-generation Gen 3 fuel cell system in North America.
The initiative is part of Toyota’s broader mission to decarbonize logistics operations and support its long-term sustainability targets, including its 2050 Challenge to cut carbon emissions across its supply chain.
Toyota’s hydrogen-powered trucks will service routes between the Port of Long Beach, the Toyota North American Parts Center in Ontario (NAPCC), and areas as far south as San Diego.

A dedicated hydrogen fueling station will be constructed on the NAPCC campus to support the new fleet, with infrastructure partnerships already in place with Air Liquide and Iwatani.
These collaborations aim to deliver liquid hydrogen through faster, high-flow fueling systems—designed to match the speed of diesel pumps—enhancing uptime for commercial operators.
Beyond California, Toyota is strengthening its hydrogen production and sourcing pipeline through a supply agreement with Air Liquide’s facility in North Las Vegas and international R&D collaborations.
In Japan, Toyota is working with Chiyoda to advance electrolysis technology, and is exploring hydrogen generation from renewable waste sources like animal waste and landfill methane.
Toyota also debuted its Gen 3 fuel cell system, designed for versatility across commercial, trucking, and passenger vehicles.
The new system, expected to arrive in the U.S. in or after 2027, boasts 20% greater efficiency and power compared to its predecessor. For heavy-duty truck use, it’s engineered to last over 600,000 miles without major servicing—on par with traditional diesel engines.
Toyota’s presence at ACT Expo underscores its long-term investment in hydrogen infrastructure, cleaner freight solutions, and a more sustainable transport future built on collaborative innovation.
