Volkswagen is expanding on its electric vision in China by revealing three new concept cars—ID. AURA, ID. ERA, and ID. EVO—at Auto Shanghai 2024.
These models follow the design philosophy set by last year’s ID. CODE concept and represent a new generation of intelligent electric vehicles tailored to Chinese customers.
Developed in collaboration with local joint ventures FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC VOLKSWAGEN, and Volkswagen Anhui, the vehicles offer a glimpse into VW’s roadmap for China, with plans to launch over 30 new models—20 of them NEVs—by 2027.

Unveiled at the Volkswagen Group Night in Shanghai, the trio showcases AI-enhanced systems capable of Level 2++ automation, enabling semi-autonomous driving including overtaking, turning, and merging with driver oversight.

The initiative is part of VW’s “In China, for China” strategy, aimed at maintaining its leadership among foreign carmakers in the country. Executives emphasized the company’s commitment to rapid development cycles and local innovation, facilitated by their Hefei-based development hub.

Each concept car reflects different market needs:
- ID. ERA, from SAIC VOLKSWAGEN, is a full-size SUV with range extender tech offering a total range of over 1,000 km.
- ID. EVO, from Volkswagen Anhui, is designed for younger, tech-savvy drivers and runs on an 800-volt platform with advanced digital architecture and OTA updates.
- ID. AURA, from FAW-Volkswagen, targets budget-conscious buyers with a sleek electric notchback built on the new CMP platform and includes an AI assistant with smartphone-like interface.

Despite varied designs, all three maintain Volkswagen’s signature style, now reinterpreted for China’s diverse and fast-evolving market.
