Hyundai Motor Group is teaming up with Pertamina and the West Java Provincial Government to build Indonesia’s first waste-to-hydrogen (W2H) ecosystem, with plans to launch a hydrogen refueling station by 2027 using Pertamina’s existing CNG infrastructure. This marks Hyundai’s first international W2H initiative, building on its successful model in Korea.
Announced at the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit in Jakarta on April 14, 2025, the collaboration includes support from Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS).

The station will use low-carbon hydrogen produced from biogas at the Sarimukti landfill near Bandung, which processes around 80% of the city’s daily waste.
Construction is set to begin later this year following a technical feasibility study. The project aims to enhance waste management, reduce carbon emissions, and improve local infrastructure with added CSR efforts, including clean water access and healthcare in surrounding communities.
The Group is also working with Sejin G&E to stabilize the landfill and with Hyundai Rotem to convert biogas to hydrogen.
This initiative is part of Hyundai’s broader hydrogen strategy under its HTWO brand, extending the Group’s reach into the ASEAN market following its 2022 vehicle plant launch in Indonesia.
With strong backing from government bodies and a focus on sustainable energy and disaster prevention, this W2H project aligns closely with Indonesia’s National Hydrogen Roadmap and reflects Hyundai’s global hydrogen ambitions.
