Audi has introduced its groundbreaking MHEV Plus mild hybrid technology in the new A5 and Q5 series, marking a leap forward in efficiency and performance for combustion engine vehicles.
Built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), this system integrates a powertrain generator (PTG), belt alternator starter (BAS), and a 48-volt lithium iron phosphate battery to reduce emissions, enhance agility, and enable partially electric driving.
The PTG, a compact electric motor with integrated power electronics, offers up to 18 kW of power and 230 Nm of torque, improving responsiveness and performance, especially during starts and low-speed driving.

The PTG supports the combustion engine at speeds up to 140 km/h and disengages at higher speeds to optimize efficiency. Additionally, the BAS manages engine starts and charges the battery, while the 48-volt system uses advanced liquid cooling for optimal operation across a range of conditions.
The MHEV Plus system brings several advantages, such as electric coasting, emission-free maneuvering, and energy recovery.
For instance, the A5 2.0 TDI achieves fuel savings of up to 0.38 l/100 km, while the 3.0 TFSI V6 saves up to 0.74 l/100 km, significantly reducing CO2 emissions. These gains are achieved through intelligent energy management, enabling efficient battery charging and discharging cycles during driving.
Audi’s customer-centric development ensures the system adapts to different driving modes. In D mode, it balances efficiency and comfort, while in S mode, it provides dynamic performance with increased electric support. The result is a smoother, more agile driving experience with enhanced responsiveness, particularly when accelerating or navigating tight corners.
This advanced system also features a regenerative braking system (iBRS) that prioritizes energy recovery, engaging the mechanical brakes only when necessary. With an electric air-conditioning compressor, the system maintains comfort even when the combustion engine is off, such as during coasting or red-light stops.
Although MHEV Plus won’t be available in the U.S. market due to differing consumer preferences, it reinforces Audi’s commitment to sustainable innovation. The technology’s ability to blend fuel efficiency, electrified driving, and enhanced comfort makes it ideal for long-distance travel and urban commuting alike.
