Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a milestone in its nearly century-long tradition of supplying vehicles to the Vatican with the introduction of the first all-electric Popemobile.
Based on the new electric G-Class, this one-of-a-kind vehicle was personally handed over to Pope Francis at the Vatican by Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius and the design and development team.
This eco-friendly innovation reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability while meeting the Vatican’s high standards for functionality and design.

A Sustainable Step for the 2025 Jubilee
Designed specifically for Pope Francis’ needs, the electric Popemobile will be ready in time for the 2025 Jubilee, an event expected to draw millions to Rome. The custom-built G-Class, equipped with an electric drivetrain tailored for low-speed public appearances, aligns with the principles of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si, which advocates sustainable development. CEO Ola Källenius emphasized that the vehicle represents Mercedes-Benz’s vision for electromobility and its goal of a net-carbon-neutral fleet by 2039.
Custom Features for Papal Duties
The bespoke vehicle includes a centrally positioned, height-adjustable single seat, allowing Pope Francis to address audiences from multiple angles. Additional passenger seats and a modified roof structure further enhance its functionality. Painted in classic pearl white, the design balances elegance with purpose. Crafted through meticulous manual labor, the vehicle integrates advanced EQ technology, ensuring emission-free operations.
A Privileged Moment for Mercedes-Benz
The project, managed collaboratively by teams in Graz, Sindelfingen, and Rome, was marked by exceptional craftsmanship and innovation. Following the handover, Pope Francis invited the development team to a private audience, highlighting the unique partnership. Team members expressed pride in contributing to the project, underscoring its significance both professionally and personally.
A Longstanding Legacy with the Vatican
Mercedes-Benz has been supplying vehicles to the Vatican since 1930, starting with the Nürburg 460 Pullman Saloon for Pope Pius XI. Over the decades, models such as the 300 Landaulet, 600 Pullman, and G-Class have become iconic Popemobiles. The introduction of the all-electric G-Class represents a new chapter in this historic relationship, combining tradition with cutting-edge innovation.
Voices from Mercedes-Benz Leadership
Executives from Mercedes-Benz highlighted the project’s importance as a symbol of sustainable progress. Britta Seeger, responsible for Sales and Marketing, called the collaboration a meaningful testament to shared values, while Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer, praised the new Popemobile’s seamless blend of sustainability, design, and function.
With this revolutionary Popemobile, Mercedes-Benz continues its legacy of crafting vehicles for the Holy See, blending heritage with a vision for a greener future.
