Toyota Motor North America has published its 2024 North American Environmental Sustainability Report, detailing the company’s environmental initiatives and progress across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
The report highlights Toyota’s commitment to sustainability through advancements in carbon reduction, water stewardship, circular economy initiatives, and biodiversity efforts.

Kevin Butt, regional environmental sustainability director, Toyota Motor North America, expressed confidence in the company’s trajectory: “Building on Toyota’s principle of continuous improvement, we are working toward not only carbon neutrality but also fostering standardized collaboration and data management practices among our team members. We look forward to further understanding the impacts of sustainability as we advance.”
Key Achievements in the 2024 Report
Carbon Reduction
- 77% of Toyota and Lexus models in North America now offer electrified options, with more additions planned.
- Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions (operations-related) reduced by 14% compared to FY2019.
- 74 dealers participate in the Dealer Environmental Excellence Program (D.E.E.P.), reducing non-renewable electricity use by 20%.
Water Stewardship
- 6.8% reduction in water withdrawal per vehicle manufactured compared to FY2021.
- Focused on site- and watershed-based actions to ensure socially equitable and environmentally sustainable water management.
Circular Economy
- 93% of waste recycled, reused, or repurposed in 2023.
- Achieved a 9% reduction in single-use packaging materials in FY2024, totaling a 22% reduction since FY2018.
Biodiversity
- Developed 4,094.5 additional acres of pollinator habitat in FY2024, reaching a total of 14,432.4 acres—more than halfway to the goal of 26,000 acres.
- Conservation programs at 16 sites, including nine manufacturing plants, received Wildlife Habitat Council® Conservation Certification for biodiversity enhancement.
