The 1970 Lancia Strato’s Zero prototype captivated audiences at the 73rd Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, securing a win in its class, “Wedge Concepts and Prototypes,” and earning a spot among the final four contenders for the prestigious “Best of Show” award. This iconic event, held at the Pebble Beach Golf Resort in California, serves as the pinnacle of Monterey Car Week, attracting automotive enthusiasts from around the world.
The Lancia Strato’s Zero, owned by a U.S. collector, stood out for its groundbreaking design, created by Nuccio Bertone and Marcello Gandini. Unveiled at the 1970 Turin Motor Show, this prototype, just 85 centimeters tall, became the foundation for the legendary 1971 Lancia Stratos. Its influence can still be seen in Lancia’s future models, including the New Ypsilon’s distinctive round taillights.

The Strato’s Zero, restored to its original bronze color in 2000, features innovative design elements like a row of 55-watt bulbs in the front and a strip of 84 small bulbs in the rear. Inside, the car boasts nearly horizontal seats and a left-shifted instrument panel with a green acrylic glass display. Powered by a 115-hp 1.6-liter V4 engine from a Lancia Fulvia HF, the prototype embodies the sporty spirit that would define the Lancia Stratos in both its road and racing versions.
The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a highlight of the global automotive calendar, featured over 200 vintage cars from 58 countries this year, making it a true celebration of automotive elegance. The Lancia Strato’s Zero’s success at the event underscores its enduring legacy as a masterpiece of Italian design and a key influence on Lancia’s storied history.
Lancia, with its 117-year legacy of Italian elegance and innovation, continues to inspire with its Renaissance Plan, which includes the launch of the New Ypsilon and a 10-year strategic vision focused on sustainability, customer centricity, and social responsibility.
